A Research Subject of a Faculty Member of Clinical Nutrition Selected for an AMED Project

LastUpDate: July 17, 2020

A research subject of Associate Professor Akiko Kuwabara at Clinical Nutrition of the Graduate School of Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Osaka Prefecture University has been selected by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) for its FY2020 Practical Research Project for Lifestyle-related Diseases including Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes Mellitus.

Research outline

Vitamin D deficiency is known to be related to lifestyle-related diseases including osteoporosis. Since vitamin D is produced in the skin through the action of UV-B radiation, an increased tendency to avoid UV exposure has resulted in vitamin D deficiency, particularly among young women.

In this study, we would like to evaluate serum vitamin D [25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D], UVB exposure, lifestyles, and dietary vitamin D intake in areas with different latitude in Japan, and develop a validated prediction model for vitamin D deficiency. This model would help to prevent vitamin D deficiency in the future.
