Osaka Prefecture University

Approval for the Establishment of the Title “Osaka Metropolitan University”

LastUpDate: September 01, 2021

We are pleased to announce that on August 31, 2021, we received a letter of approval (dated August 27) from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, officially approving the establishment of Osaka Metropolitan University, which we had applied for in April of this year.

Osaka Metropolitan University is a new public university that combines the research and educational capabilities of Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University, both of which have a history of around 140 years.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude first to the governor and mayor, then to Osaka Prefectural and the Osaka City Governments, the two parliaments, and all other concerned parties for their thoughtful discussions on our behalf.

All of us, the faculty and staff at OMU, will continue our valiant efforts to achieve giant strides forward. I humbly ask for your continued support and encouragement.

Yoshiki Nishizawa, Chairperson, University Public Corporation Osaka

The largest public university in Japan, with 11 undergraduate schools, one college and 15 graduate schools, is born here in Osaka.

We have finally reached the beginning. It is with a sober heart that I look forward to the opening of this new university. By synergizing the unique characteristics and respective strengths of our predecessors, Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University, we will create a research-oriented university recognized worldwide as a “hub of knowledge” that will lead the development of Osaka and the world.

We, the faculty and staff at OMU, are moving forward every day to create the best university possible. We aim to nurture individuals who can face social challenges by making full use of their comprehensive knowledge. We hope that those who want to experience the joy of learning, those who want to take on the challenge of cutting-edge research, and those who value the bonds with others through extracurricular activities and volunteer work will enroll in our university.

The entire faculty and staff will work together to prepare for the opening of the university and welcome the first class of Osaka Metropolitan University students.

Masahiro Tatsumisago, President expectant, Osaka Metropolitan University
