Prof.Dr.Prof.h.c. Andreas Dengel received the Distinguished Honorary Professorship from OPU

Osaka Prefecture University (OPU), Japan announced that they have awarded the title of “Distinguished Honorary Professor” to Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Andreas Dengel (Department of Computer Science, Technical University of Kaiserslautern (TU-KL) /Head of Smart Data & Knowledge Services Research Department, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) GmbH).

Prof. Dengel is the fifth awardee of the title of “Distinguished Honorary Professor” in the 135-year history of OPU since its foundation in 1883.

Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Andreas Dengel is Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH) in Kaiserslautern where he leads the Smart Data & Knowledge Services Research Department. In 1993 he was appointed Professor at the Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (TU-KL) where he holds the chair of Knowledge-Based Systems.

For more than twenty years, he has contributed to the exchange of faculty and students between OPU and DFKI/ TU-KL. When he comes to Japan, he never forgets to visit OPU for research activities and lectures, having visited OPU more than fifteen times. In 2009, he was appointed as an OPU visiting professor (professor kyakuin). Since then, he has worked to enhance our education and research, co-organizing seven workshops, and being a member of four Joint Research Projects.

OPU have decided to award this title to Prof. Dengel in recognition of his contribution to and outstanding achievements in research at OPU.

The Awarding Ceremony was held at OPU, Nakamozu main campus in the afternoon on March 14, 2018. Dr.Hiroshi TSUJI, president of the university, awarded Prof. Dengel with the appointment letter of “Distinguished Honorary Professorship of Osaka Prefecture University”. Prof. Dengel delivered a Commemorative Lecture titled “From Hindsights to Insights – 25 Years of Professorship (and a bit more)”. He gave his speech saying that he will try his best to promote the development of computer science related research and strengthen the collaboration of OPU with TU-KL and DFKI.
