1. Is there any “Japanese Language Preparatory Course” or “Special Course for International Students” for studying Japanese before entering a university?

There is no “Japanese Language Preparatory Course” or “Special Course for International Students”. However, we offer extracurricular Japanese lessons (beginner class) for international students after your enrollment.

2. Are there any graduate (Master’s) courses that are offered in English?

The Graduate School of Engineering has an optional course taught in English and international students may complete the master course only in English.
For other Graduate Schools, the courses are basically offered in Japanese.

3. I would like to apply for the Undergraduate School of OPU. What should I do?

International applicants are able to take the special entrance examination. It is required for all of international applicants to take the Japanese language test. You will also need to take the TOEFL or IELTS.

4. I would like to apply for the Graduate School of OPU. What should I do?

Please follow the 3 steps below.

  1. Find out if there is a graduate school or major you want to study.

  2. Find an academic advisor who can help you with your research theme.

  3. Prepare your resume and research plan, and contact the academic advisor of your choice.

5. I would like to join OPU exchange program. What are the procedures?

6. What kinds of scholarships are available?

Available scholarships include the Japanese Government (Monbukagaskusho: MEXT) Scholarship, the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, the Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan), and those offered by foreign governments and private foundations. Please note, however, that the selection processes are highly competitive, and in most cases applications are accepted only after entrance to the University. It is therefore generally necessary to have sufficient financial resources prior to matriculation.

7. How much are the entrance examination fees and admission fees?

The entrance examination fee is 30,000 yen. The admission fee is 282,000 yen for students living in Osaka Prefecture and 382,000 yen for other students.

8. How much is the tuition fee?

Tuition for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs is 535,800 yen per year, and for research students, 356,400 yen per year.

9. Does Osaka Prefecture University have a tuition exemption system?

Yes, OPU has a tuition exemption system based on an assessment of your grades and income. Recruitment will take place after admission.

10. I have already passed the entrance examination and intend to attend the University. How do I obtain the required visa?

Successful candidates must obtain a Student Visa (Ryugaku) through a Japanese diplomatic mission in their country by presenting a Certificate of Permit for Admission from Osaka Prefecture University, a valid passport, and other required documents. You may also need to submit evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Japan.
Those without the status are advised to consult with their supervisor.

11.  Are there any dormitories for international students at Osaka Prefecture University?

Yes, On the Nakamozu Campus, there is a dormitory for single students (I-wing), as well as rooms rented by the university for international students in the surrounding area. There are also rooms around the Rinku Campus that are rented by the university for international students.

12. My apartment lease agreement says I need a guarantor. Can the University be my guarantor?

When you sign a lease contract for an apartment, the university can be your guarantor if you sign up for the “Comprehensive Insurance for International Student Housing”. The insurance fee is 4,000 yen/year (FY2020).

13. Can you issue various certificates?

We can issue Certificate of Graduation(undergraduate), Certificate of Graduation(graduate school), Transcript, Transcript of Credits, and Certificate of Degree.
