New Residency Management System

The new residency management system began on July 9, 2012.
Please refer to the websites below for more detailed information.

(1) The Resident Card (After July 9, 2012)

A Resident Card will be issed to mid-to long-term residents who have landing permission in Japan. If you have been issued the Certificate of Alien Registration with effective period, you do not need to take any action until the expiration date of it.
Your current Certificate is considered to be equivalent to the Resident Card.

a)         You are required to notify your place of residence at your local city / ward Office within 14 days of finding residency. Please make sure to bring your Resident Card when you go there.

b)         When you need to change the information, (i.e. address, name, nationality, etc.) you are required to notify the related offices within a certain period. Please refer to the above mentioned websites in advance.

(2) Re-Entry permits (After July 9, 2012)

When leaving Japan, you are required to take your valid passport and Resident Card (or valid Certificate of Alien Registration Card).
If you leave Japan within 1 year of departure, you do not need to apply for a re-entry permit.
Please inform your academic advisor of your dates of departure and return and submit the Report of leaving Japan to the International Office in advance.

(3) Extension of Period of stay

You may apply for an extension from three months prior to the
expiration date of your status of residence.
Application documents are as follows.

  • Application for Extension of stay  (http://www.moj.go.jp/ONLINE/IMMIGRATION/16-3.html)  “Organization Part 1 & Part 2” should be certified by the Student Affairs Division.
  • Certificate of Enrollment
  • Transcript
  • Passport
  • Certificate of Alien Registration / Resident Card
  • 4000-yen revenue stamp
  • A document certifying the method of support to meet your expenses (i.e. Certificate of Scholarship , your bank account)
